![]() ![]() ![]() Like the brilliant colors of a Mexican blanket, she sees the vibrant thread running through the community she lives in ? a community of mestizaje, or a blending of cultures. In San Antonio, where the artist is based, her community is a tightly woven fabric of Mexican and Anglo cultural influences. ![]() She fuses these cultural influences into her multimedia artworks on display at the Museum of Art at Midwestern State University. They're an often whimsical and celebratory collage of oil painting, textiles, wallpaper and folk art with a contemporary twist that comes together in the genre for which she is known, "retratos," or portraits. Sosa didn't start painting until about 10 years ago. She worked in advertising, though her master's degree is in political science. When she and her husband, Lionel, moved to Floresville, outside of San Antonio, she also decided to make a career move away from the corporate world. The couple gave an old farmhouse a redo, converting a workshop into a painting studio for Lionel. It didn't take long for Sosa to pick up a paintbrush, too. She was 45 when she reinvented herself and went on to study with portrait artist Nelson Shanks. Sosa names Modigliani and Matisse as her influences. Modigliani's stylized people and Matisse's colors and playfulness with perspective have obviously played a part in her work. Sosa has been recognized for her Huipiles Series, in which she documents how huipiles ? a regional garment in Mexico ? are worn and enjoyed by women in the United States. The series has been included in exhibits at the Smithsonian Latin Cultural Center in Washington, D.C., and at Museo Alameda in San Antonio. One of her new series is her Tree of Life Series. Trees of Life are a three-dimensional folk art popular in Mexico. They are often ceramics that celebrate the history of a family or center on the Creation. But Sosa's interpretation integrates modern women with Trees of Life in two-dimensional form. The women look as if trees are growing from their head, and hanging on the trees are ornaments that reflect what the woman is thinking. The exhibition at the Museum of Art includes several pieces from Sosa's Tree of Life Series, such "Los Angeles on My Mind." In it, a woman stands in front of a vibrant red background with a treelike form branching out of her head. Placed on the branches are flowers, birds and saints. In "Rock-N-Roll," a woman on a blue background has emerging from her head a beehive hairdo that includes a little guitar, a miniature Alamo and a margarita glass. The exhibit, said MSU Museum of Art Curator Danny Bills, includes 15 paintings each from the Tree of Life and Huipiles series, along with 16 found objects/digital manipulations.
